LIFE: Ron Howard: Clint's addiction, 47+ years of marriage and rejected by George Lucus

Most of us first met Ron Howard when he starred as "Opie" on The Andy Grifith Show, then we knew him as Richie Cunningham on the long running TV show Happy Days. I doubt that any actor alive has been in front of a camera more often than him, and yet he's done some great films as a director as well. Here's an interiew of one of the great men of Hollywood, well worth taking the time to listen to.

MOVIE: "The Foxes of Harrow"

Thursday, August 02, 2018

Another movie courtesy the Turner Classic Movie channel, this time the 1947 epic entitled "The Foxes of Harrow" starring Rex Harrison and Maureen O'Hara.  This was a wonderful black and white film detailing what life was like in New Orleans during the 1820's amongst the rich and plantation owners.

LESSON:  You might be able to buy your way into high society, but that doesn't make you a gentleman.

MOVIE: "Giant"

Wednesday, August 01, 2018

Thanks to the Turner Classic Movie channel, I was finally able to see most of the 1956 movie called "Giant" starring Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, and James Dean.  At three hours long, it was quite a haul, but for the most part, well worth the effort.

LESSON: Some people just never change, no matter how much money or fame they have.   If they are rotten to begin with, money and wealth will just accelerate their downfall.

MOVIE: Incredibles 2

Sunday, July 29, 2018

Saw this film Saturday night, and just LOVED it.  There's been tons and tons of movies about superheroes the past twenty to thirty years now, but this is the FIRST movie about an entire family of superheroes, even with a baby!  Though the Incredibles may some incredible super powers, even a family of superheroes cannot escape the emotional dynamics of regular old American family life in the post-war era.

This movie is, of course a sequel to the original "Incredibles" movie that came out fourteen years ago, and picks up EXACTLY where the last film left off.  Being completely animated, there's no issue with the actors looking fourteen years older!  All the famous voices are still with us, and the voices don't seem like they aged at all.

This movie is HIGHLY recommended!

MOVIE: "Captain America: The Winter Soldier"

Wednesday, July 4, 2018

Thankfully the FX cable channel decided to show the Captain America movies on July 4th.  Surprisingly, this film may be one of the most intelligent super hero films ever made.  I've seen it several times, and always enjoy it, and also learn something new with each viewing.

Captain America, his boss Nick Fury, and his friend Black Widow, have been targeted to be terminated, by the very organization they work for: S.H.I.E.L.D.   The reason why is very simple: several key leaders of S.H.I.E.L.D. are a conspiracy known as Hydra, that has it's roots in World War II's NAZI Germany.  They don't want righteous superheroes messing with their plans, so those three have to be killed.   Basically, almost everyone they knew and worked alongside of turns against them.

Kind of reminds me of a guy named Boethius, and what happened to him.....

Lesson: The worst and most dangerous conspiracies are the ones at the highest levels.

MOVIE: "Independence Day"

Wednesday, July 04, 2018

It's July 4th, so it's time for my July 4th tradition: watching the 1996 film "Independence Day", which I've been doing since I saw the film for the first time back in '96.

Lesson: Sometimes looney conspiracy theories are true....

MOVIE : DVD : The Tale of The Princess Kaguya

A new addition to the Pseudo Boethius DVD Library:

Barnes and Noble sent me a coupon for Father's Day. So, right before the closed on Sunday, I went there and picked up a few things.  This DVD is one of them.

I will often wander into the Barnes and Noble DVD section just to see what they have.  I almost never buy any DVD's anymore, but it's always fun to look.  I saw this film in their foreign films section, and something about it made me very curious and interested, though I have never seen it before, nor never heard about it.  I put it on my list of DVD's to buy however, and today I can cross this one off my list.

This is truly one of the most visually beautiful films I've ever seen.  It's as if they decided they wanted to make an animated movie out of watercolors.

One good Japanese animated film is worth one thousand hours of psychology, philosophy and theology.

MOVIE: "Jurassic Park"

The strange synchronicities of the world are often rather striking....

Soon after watching the 2015 film "Jurassic World", I turned on regular television, and found the 1993 film "Jurassic Park" playing on NBC!   This was the film that started the entire "Jurassic" series that is still going very strong to this day.

So after watching "Jurassic World", I found myself easily going back to "Jurassic Park".   One thing I really appreciated about both films, is that good old Tyrannosaurus Rex turns out to be the unsung hero of both films.

The book is a thousand times better than the film.

MOVIE: "Jurassic World"

This evening I was very tired, so I rented the 2015 film "Jurassic World" and watched it while I relaxed.  It is a continuation of the famous "Jurassic Park" series as originally created from Micheal Crichton's famous sci-fi novel by the same name, perhaps one of the most popular works of sci-fi in modern history.

In "Jurassic World" a dinosaur theme park is now fully realized, having been setup on an isolated island off the coast of Costa Rica.  All the dinosaurs in the park are genetic recreations of actual dinosaurs that roamed the earth millions of years ago.  But things start getting out of control when the park starts designing and creating their own special species that have no historical counterpart.

As is so often the case in good science fiction, the movie is a commentary on genetics and genetic engineering, and how by messing with DNA, we may end up creating monsters that will kill us all.
